Divergent Gender Revolutions: Cohort Changes in Household Financial Management across Income Gradients

The ways in which partners manage their money provide important clues to gender inequality and the nature of couple relationships. Analyzing data from nationally representative surveys ( N = 11,730 couples), I examine changes across British cohorts born between 1920s 1990s household financial management, how vary individuals couples occupying differential income positions. results show divergent, nuanced cohort trends toward equality couples’ management. Across successive low-earning women, there has been a subtle relaxation form male control, reflected decrease proportion men adopting “back-seat” management by retaining majority couple’s while delegating chore managing daily expenses partners. By contrast, empowerment high-earning women is primarily an individualization evident joint increase independent trend particularly prominent among both have equally high earnings. findings new insights into extensions theorization relations
